SIWES Programme

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a compulsory industrial attachment programme that bridges the gap between academic theory and real-world professional practice for all CS students.

Important: SIWES Supervision Details Are on Your Dashboard

All SIWES-related information — including your assigned supervisor, supervising lecturer, company/placement details, visit schedules, log book status, and reports — are securely stored on your personal dashboard. You must log in as a student or staff member to access them. They are not displayed publicly for security and privacy reasons.

Real-World Experience

SIWES connects classroom knowledge with industry practice — placing students in real technology companies, organisations, and government agencies for hands-on professional training.

What is SIWES?

The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a Federal Government of Nigeria initiative managed by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) and coordinated by the National Universities Commission (NUC) and NBTE for polytechnic programmes.

It exposes students to the working environment of industry and commerce — preparing them to meet the technical and behavioural demands of the labour market. The scheme is compulsory for all ND and HND Computer Science students at Federal Polytechnic Bali.

  • Students are placed in approved IT companies, government agencies, banks, and tech organisations
  • Each student is assigned a departmental supervisor (lecturer) and an industry-based supervisor
  • Students maintain a log book recording daily activities and skills acquired
  • The department's SIWES coordinator oversees placement and evaluation
  • ITF pays a stipend to eligible students during the attachment period
  • A written technical report is submitted at the end of the attachment

Key Roles in SIWES

Three main parties make the SIWES scheme work effectively for every student.

The Student

  • Reports daily to the assigned industry placement
  • Maintains and updates the SIWES log book regularly
  • Participates actively in all assigned tasks and projects
  • Submits a comprehensive technical report at the end
  • Attends departmental supervisor visits as scheduled
  • Accesses all supervision info via the student dashboard

Departmental Supervisor (Lecturer)

  • Assigned by the SIWES Coordinator to supervise specific students
  • Conducts scheduled visits to the student's place of attachment
  • Reviews and assesses the student's log book and performance
  • Provides guidance and academic support remotely and on-site
  • Submits supervisor evaluation forms via the staff portal
  • Supervisor details visible to students on their dashboard

Industry Supervisor

  • Oversees the student's daily activities at the company
  • Signs and confirms log book entries each week
  • Provides practical training and professional mentorship
  • Evaluates the student's attitude, skills, and performance
  • Completes the industry assessment form at end of attachment
  • Liaises with the departmental supervisor during visit days

SIWES Process Timeline

A structured 6-month journey from preparation to final assessment.

1
Before Departure

Registration & Placement

Students register for SIWES through the department and submit their preferred placement organisations. The SIWES Coordinator liaises with the ITF to finalise approved company placements and issues placement letters to each student.

2
Departure

Collect Your Documents

Collect your official ITF logbook, departmental attachment letter, student SIWES ID, and supervisor details from the SIWES office. All supervisor assignments are also visible on your student dashboard.

3
Month 1–6

Active Industrial Attachment

Report to your approved company and begin your 6-month attachment. Update your logbook daily or weekly, learn on the job, and maintain professional conduct at all times. Your departmental supervisor will visit at least twice during this period.

4
During Attachment

Supervisor Visits

Your assigned departmental supervisor will conduct scheduled visits to your company. Ensure your log book is up to date before each visit. Visit schedules and supervisor contact details are available on your dashboard.

5
End of Attachment

Write Your Technical Report

At the end of the 6 months, prepare and submit your comprehensive SIWES technical report. This is a key component of your overall assessment. Your industry supervisor signs the final logbook endorsement before you depart.

6
Post-Attachment

Submission & Defence

Submit your SIWES logbook and technical report to the department. A SIWES seminar or defence may be scheduled where you present your experience. Your performance is graded and credited to your academic record.

Access Your SIWES Information

All personalised SIWES details — your supervisor name and contact, your industry placement company, visit dates, log book status, supervisor assessment scores, and reports — are securely available only on your personal dashboard. This ensures your privacy and the integrity of the scheme.

Students and staff must log in to access SIWES supervision details. Information is role-specific: students see their own data while staff supervisors see their assigned students. The department does not share supervision details publicly. If you have issues logging in, contact the SIWES Coordinator directly.

Can't access your dashboard? Contact the SIWES Office or visit the CS Department office in person with your student ID.

SIWES Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out who my SIWES supervisor is?
Your assigned departmental supervisor's name, phone number, and email are displayed on your student dashboard after you log in. Go to student.php, enter your credentials, and navigate to the SIWES section of your dashboard.
When does SIWES take place?
SIWES typically takes place between the first and second year of both ND and HND programmes. For ND students it runs after ND1, and for HND students after HND1. The attachment runs for 6 months (one semester). Check your academic calendar or dashboard for exact dates each session.
What if I can't find a company to do my SIWES?
Visit the SIWES Coordinator at the CS Department before the attachment period. The department maintains a list of approved companies and can assist with placement. Do not wait until the last minute — approach the coordinator at least 4 weeks before the attachment start date.
Does SIWES count toward my final grade?
Yes. SIWES carries 6 credit units and is graded based on your log book, technical report, industry supervisor evaluation, and departmental supervisor assessment. It is a compulsory requirement for graduation — students who do not complete SIWES cannot graduate.
How does the ITF stipend work?
Eligible students receive a training allowance paid directly by the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). Students must register on the ITF online portal and submit their bank details. Stipend payments can sometimes be delayed — contact ITF offices directly for payment enquiries. The department does not handle stipend disbursements.
What happens if my supervisor visits and I am absent from work?
Absence during a supervisor visit without a valid excuse is a serious matter and will negatively affect your SIWES assessment score. Always inform your industry supervisor and your departmental supervisor in advance if you need to be absent. Your visit schedule is shown on your student dashboard.
Can I do my SIWES outside Bali or outside Taraba State?
Yes, students may do their SIWES at ITF-approved organisations anywhere in Nigeria. However, you must notify the department and SIWES Coordinator of your company address so that a supervisor visit can be arranged. Companies must be ITF-registered to qualify as valid placements.
